our boss claude vonstroke is the busiest guy we know. when hes not traveling the world or curating an event, hes in the studio every day putting in hours upon hours, relentless in perfecting his craft. hes had a slew of hits the past couple years in the form of remixes and collaborations, and now with the walay (my bae) ep, claude gets back to some inventive and somewhat out of the box solo works. the title song leads with a melodic riff and an funky vocal that sounds like a defective cyborg is proclaiming love for his partner, walay. this quasi-human uses the slang my bae to try and pass for human and we almost believe in his passion. the sound harkens back to old classic rave tracks but also pushes very modern production techniques. on the flip, raw nerve is an emotional exploration in both sounds and lyrics. a melancholy vonstroke dives deep into his insecurities and fears with sonically mutated lyrics like im feeling so sad, im feeling real bad today. when i see you on the street i dont want to compete. you can feel the social instability oozing out of the vocal only to come back at the close with a violently hard bassline embodying the personal angst and frustration that goes along with not fitting in.

manchester producer andy hanley has had one previous outing on ruf kutz but now hes adopted the haners alias to kick off the misadventures label with an assured grip of warm, discoid funk shot through with a healthy dose of 80s production finish. heaven is definitely the most dancefloor ready track a shimmering slice of laid back disco house with plenty of hooks and a dreamy, slightly dubbed out atmosphere. girl is more audacious, slowing the tempo right down and riding on a brittle beat and a heavily reverbed dose of island boogie. you keeps things slow and easy for the gentle part of the night a consummate smooth groover.

chris romans has been rolling out crucial electro jams for a number of highly regarded labels since the early 00s. amongst them are touchin bass, shipwrec, frustrated funk and central processing unit, so that tells you everything you need to know about the level he s operating at as 214. now he comes to 20/20 vision with some body-poppin jams of the highest order, broadening the tech house label s remit to embrace the thriving electro scene with one of its most vital practitioners. potential events is a brooding, atmospheric affair while windeye draws on a more playful, detroit indebted palette of sounds. radioactive man remixes windey- with a steady, finely detailed approach, and then back to sine finishes the record off with another snappy salvo of funky drums and bubbling synths.

berlin-based pascal hetzel returns to caduceus records with a new slice of gritty industrial-tinged techno and finely tuned sound design. “noxious stimulus”, the ep’s title track, is a heavy peak-time filler with a mesmerizing bleepy modular sequence on top of rough monochrome beats. on her remix, rising talent denise rabe cranks up the paranoia and turns “noxious stimulus” into an unrelenting pitch black grinder. “pain tolerance threshold” starts off as hefty with yet another dose of metallic atmospheres and crushing modular sequences, until a bright pad appears out of the dark. proper techno goodness for the wee hours in your favorite warehouse. pressing on smokey green marbled vinyl.
